Food does help, but genetics has just as much to do with their over all condition. I think it is what ever works for the individual dog. May or may not be "top" of the line kibble, raw, and it just may be a low quality kibble. Feeding what works for the individual dog. I tried some top of the line kibbles and they caused my dogs severe issues. Took a lot of money getting them back in condition afterward.
